Renew Your Circulation with Cardiovascular Herbs*

Cayenne stimulates blood flow, strengthening the heart and metabolism.* Cayenne is also a general tonic, specifically helpful for the circulatory, digestive, and eliminative systems. Cayenne increases stomach secretions and peristaltic action in the colon. Dried cayenne is high in beta-carotene, cobalt, essential fats, niacin, and zinc. In Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine, Daniel Mowrey, Ph.D., recommends cayenne for circulatory stimulation, blood purification, detoxification, and fatigue. Dr. Mowrey documents cayenne’s ability to inhibit the tendency of blood clots to stick together and form clots (platelet aggregation).* Cayenne increases fibrinolytic activity. Ingesting cayenne with a meal prevents fibrin—which forms blood clots or blood stickiness—from building up in the blood.* Taking small amounts of cayenne on a daily basis keeps fibrinolysis at a more of less consistently high level.*

"As a general stimulant and corrector of circulatory problems, cayenne has no equal. I find it to be the single most useful cardiovascular remedy in my practice." Matthew Wood, herbalist.

Ginger is circulatory and digestive stimulant, promoting return blood flow through the veins back to the heart.* In combination, cayenne and ginger stimulate circulation throughout the body.* Ginger has anti-coagulant activity (blood thinning) better than aspirin.* As a catalyst, ginger combines well with other herbs and helps the body digest the more pungent cayenne. Enzyme-rich ginger root is an antioxidant that reduces inflammation.*

Garlic/Onion are close relatives - excellent together. In combination, cayenne, ginger, garlic, and onion lower triglycerides (blood fats) and promote more viscous, free flowing blood.* In The Healing Benefits of Garlic, John Heinerman, Ph.D., explains why garlic is so effective: Over 30 sulfur compounds, 17 amino acids, plus chromium, selenium and germanium. Garlic contains volatile oils that are readily transported throughout the body, nurturing the circulatory, digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts.*

Hawthorn contains flavonoids (plant chemicals) that provide direct nourishment to the heart and over time helps dilate the coronary arteries.* In German scientific research, hawthorn has been found to lower high blood pressure, increase the contractility of the heart muscle, increase blood flow to the heart, and decrease heart rate.* James Green, author of Male Herbal, calls hawthorn “the best tonic for the heart and circulatory system.” In The Green Pharmacy, James A. Duke, Ph.D., says, “Extensive research has demonstrated that hawthorn extracts improve heart function by opening up the coronary arteries.”

“Cayenne and hawthorn in a single capsule produces a special kind of synergism that augments the cardiotonic activity of both.” Daniel Mowrey, Ph.D.

Why Cayenne?

Cayenne gets your blood moving – it’s the safest, most effective blood stimulant known.

Cayenne comes in various heat ranges but African Birdseye and East Indian are best (fast acting, therapeutic). Cayenne Company uses a combination of 90,000 HU East Indian and 130,000 HU African Birdseye Cayenne. We combine cayenne with ginger root. This high heat cayenne-ginger combination can be found in all of our circulation-renewing formulas.

Cayenne can be found in liquid tinctures, bulk powder or spice, and in a capsule. Cayenne in a capsule should be taken just before sitting down to eat – or during the meal. It’s also a good idea to open a capsule and sprinkle some cayenne directly into your food. (Works well in soup, chili, etc.) Cayenne is especially good in tomato juice. In any form, cayenne works in the bloodstream, but taking it in food or drink hastens cayenne’s stimulant value.

Sensitivity to cayenne capsules may occur (especially in the morning). At first, take just one capsule with a meal. Avoid taking cayenne capsules with any hot drink. As the day goes on, you may be able to take your cayenne capsules with less food. Some people take a capsule just before retiring for the evening, aiding the body’s fasting process.

As a catalyst, cayenne helps other herbs work more effectively.* Cayenne contains capsaicin, the fiery plant chemical (fatty acid) that provides the heat and the bulk of the healing. The safe "high" that some people experience when eating cayenne is from the capsaicin. Scientists theorize that in response to the discomfort produced by the "burn," the brain releases endorphins which, at high levels, can create a sensation of pleasure.

Why Garlic?

Combined with cayenne, ginger, hawthorn and onion, garlic is a key ingredient in the “strong medicine” offered in Heart Food Caps.

Allicin (a sulfur-bearing compound) is often cited as the key medicinal in garlic, but garlic contains approximately 70 active ingredients. You don’t need extracts or isolated compounds to get results. Fresh or dry, regular whole garlic is beneficial. (The Chinese traditionally aged whole clove garlic in vinegar for two to three years to enhance its medicinal properties.)

Together, cayenne, ginger, garlic and onion promote circulation and the body’s intrinsic clot dissolving process!* Blood clots are made up of platelets (small disc shaped cells), fibrin (a mesh like substance), and trapped red blood cells. In combination, the above herbs interrupt or inhibit the process by which platelets and fibrin work to form clots!*

Why Hawthorn?

The late Dr. Robert C. Atkins wrote, “In terms of defending ourselves from heart disease, few other natural substances have impressed me as much as hawthorn...”

As a cardiac tonic, hawthorn has been valued for centuries. Numerous European studies have demonstrated that the use of hawthorn can support overall heart health by:

  • relaxing and dilating arteries*
  • increasing the flow of blood and oxygen to and from the heart*
  • supporting healthy circulation*
  • increasing endurance*
  • maintaining healthy blood vessels*
  • maintaining healthy blood pressure*

The dilation of coronary blood vessels allows a better supply of blood and oxygen to reach the heart. Much of the pressure-lowering credit goes to the plant’s flavonoids, which inhibit blood-vessel constriction in a fashion similar to that of calcium-channel blockers - but without the harmful side effects.*

The effects of hawthorn as a heart tonic are gentle and best achieved slowly over time (3-6 months). Hawthorn has been shown to be safe for long-term use, with no toxic side effects and — with few exceptions — no interactions with prescriptions drugs.

In large doses, hawthorn may increase the effects of digitalis (Lanoxin™). Do not use hawthorn while taking Lanoxin except under the advice and supervision of your doctor. (The drugs doctors usually prescribe for congestive heart failure - Lasix™, Lanoxin™, and ACE inhibitors - can be toxic and require that patients be carefully monitored.

When will I get results?

Cayenne is fast-acting and you may feel it right away. Cayenne promotes circulation immediately and you may feel more energy the first time you try it. If you take too much too soon, however, you may have diarrhea or and/or feel sick or pain in your stomach.

If you take too much too soon, take less or take them with a larger meal. Things like flax oil and yogurt cool down cayenne in the stomach better than plain water. Also, most people enjoy their cayenne when they take it before – not after – eating. Also, don’t hesitate to open the capsule or mix the cayenne into your food or tomato juice. Cayenne in the mouth alerts the body earlier to “something hot is on its way.”

We recommend starting out with Cayenne Plus (10 percent cayenne) or Heart Food Caps (25 percent cayenne) unless you have tried high heat cayenne in the past. Cayenne Plus and Heart Food Caps contin the same herbs except Cayenne Plus has less cayenne - replaced by Kelp.

Power Caps (50% cayenne) are simply too hot for some people the first time around. If you start out with Power Caps, please be sure to take just one with a meal. If it goes well, increase dosage as desired. We do not recommend Power Plus to first time users. Power Plus contains 75% 130,000 heat cayenne. Ginger, alone, buffers this highest heat product in your stomach.

A “period of healing ” may occur when you begin taking medicinal herbs like cayenne. You may go through some detoxification that requires you to back down a little and start over with a lower dose. Remember, you may feel slightly worse at first or a whole lot better. We are all different – and no two people will react the same way to our circulation formulas.

Heart Health Insurance: A team of nutrients taken together can dramatically reduce your risk of a heart attack! You can protect yourself against:

  • deadly blood clots*
  • elevated triglycerides*
  • magnesium deficiency*

While mainstream cardiology focuses on so-called blocked arteries when treating heart disease, at least 80% of all heart attacks are caused by clots – not blockage. (In fact, 50% of all people who suffer heart attacks have no measurable blockage.) Although clotting is a natural and necessary body defense, excessive clotting can turn deadly.

Blood clots are held together by a protein called fibrin. Fibrinolysis is the body’s own clot-dissolving process, reducing fibrin. But dietary factors that promote excessive clotting - like highly processed vegetable fat and a high sugar, high grain diet – slow or stop fibrinolysis. Moderate exercise and key nutrients – like the fiery heat in cayenne - promote fibrinolysis and remove excess fibrin from the blood.*

· Heart Food Caps contain equal amounts of high heat cayenne, garlic, and hawthorn. While high heat cayenne and garlic reduce fibrin, antioxidants in hawthorn gently nourish the heart and dilate (open) coronary arteries.

· Start with one capsule just before or during each meal. Increase dosage slowly. Most people take between two and six (or more) per day. Other supporting ingredients in Heart Food Caps include ginger and onion.

Elevated triglycerides are dangerous! Your liver turns the excess carbohydrates you eat – especially sugar and starch - into fat. This body-made-fat circulates in your bloodstream and is called triglycerides. The risk of heart disease increases in linear fashion as your triglycerides go above 100 mg/dl.

A recent Harvard study showed that people in the highest quartile of triglycerides (upper 25%) have 16 times the risk of heart disease compared to people with levels below 100. The Harvard study also demonstrated that elevated triglycerides are strongly associated with low levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol.

Supplementing with L-Carnitine reduces elevated triglycerides and boosts protective HDL. L-Carnitine accomplishes this dual act – lowering triglycerides and raising HDL – by delivering excess triglycerides into cells where they are burned for energy.*

Working hard even as we rest, heart muscle cells use more energy and require more L-Carnitine than any other cell in the body.* In his book, The Carnitine Defense, Stephen L. DeFelice, M.D. refers to supplemental L-Carnitine as “a heart attack insurance policy.”

Carnitine is abundant only in red meat, especially lamb. Adherence to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) grain-based Food Guide Pyramid has created widespread carnitine deficiencies and resulting weight gain. L-Carnitine is the safest, most effective weight loss supplement available (but you must restrict carbohydrates!).*

· Cayenne Co. recommends and sells NOW Foods L-Carnitine. Start with 500 mg. Increase dosage 500 mg per day until you achieve your desired energy level. L-Carnitine is an effective fat burner in amounts up to 4,000 mg daily. *
Magnesium is the most common mineral deficiency

Magnesium – not calcium – is the most common mineral deficiency. Although calcium gets the headlines, people with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease are almost always suffering from low tissue levels of magnesium.

Angina, carbohydrate cravings, cramps, chest tightness, irregular heart beats, numbness, tingling and stiff aching muscles are all signs of magnesium deficiency. A high sugar diet and stress of all kinds depletes magnesium.

As the mineral band leader, magnesium controls all other minerals. Without sufficient magnesium, for example, calcium becomes a bully – replacing magnesium in soft tissue throughout the body. Hard calcium plaques and brittle arteries are the result.

(Please remember that routine blood tests do not reveal tissue levels of magnesium. Ask your doctor for a blood cell or magnesium loading test. If you supplement with just one mineral – make it magnesium!)

Cayenne Company recommends and sells ConcenTrace Mineral Drops – a trace-mineral-rich liquid ionic magnesium. Simply add to your drinking water: 1 drop per ounce of water. Ionic means ready - as is - for absorption in the gut. (Also available in tablet form.)

Is your vitamin E all it should be?

Like the B-complex, vitamin E is a family of eight nutrients – four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma and delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma and delta).

While vitamin E is an important antioxidant that protects the heart and arteries, if you are currently taking alpha tocopherol by itself, you are not getting the full benefit of vitamin E – and it’s possible you’re doing harm!

In the last few years, evidence has surfaced that taking alpha tocopherol by itself may deplete the body of gamma tocopherol, and gamma appears to be most important for protecting against blood platelet stickiness and inflammation in the arteries.

Gamma tocopherol is especially effective against a particularly dangerous free radical implicated in a number of serious, chronic inflammatory conditions such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s. If you are taking vitamin E to protect yourself from these degenerative diseases, please read the label!

· Advanced Gamma E Complex from NOW Foods is complete. Two softgels provide 400 IUs of natural d-alpha, 300 mg of gamma, 80 mg of delta, and 5 mg of beta tocopherol.

· Gamma-E Complex also provides 10 mg of the natural tocotrienol complex from palm oil.

Why take L-Carnitine (and/or Acetyl-L-Carnitine)?
· Carnitine safely promotes weight loss. Take supplemental L-Carnitine on an empty stomach. Start with two (2) capsules per day (one tablespoon). Some people may need to take up to 8 capsules per day to activate fat-burning. (Carnitine is safe and effective in these amounts.) Once you are losing weight, you can go back down to 2 capsules (one tablespoon) per day.

· Please note: As long as you are eating excess carbohydrates, your body will not burn fat. Restrict and limit carbs – especially sugar and grains – and your body will burn fat (triglycerides). For example, eat eggs for breakfast – not cereal.

· Carnitine lowers triglycerides and raises HDL cholesterol. Triglycerides are blood fats made by the body from dietary carbohydrates. Supplemental L-Carnitine delivers these blood fats to the tiny cell furnaces where they are burned for energy.*

· Carnitine helps prevent heart disease by enhancing the overall health of the heart and by helping to prevent cardiac arrhythmias. The heart muscle uses more energy and requires more carnitine than any other group of cells in the body.*

· Carnitine slows aging!* Every cell in your body works better when it has optimal energy. By providing optimal energy to the cells of the body, carnitine helps cells live longer.*

· Carnitine increases energy levels without causing side effects or burnout.* This increases the ability of the body to exercise and helps protect tissues from damage when they lack sufficient oxygen.

· Carnitine enhances immune function.* The Acetyl-form crosses the blood brain barrier and may prevent Alzheimer's disease. Acetyl-L-Carnitine naturally increases mental energy and helps relieve depression.*

Studies with L-Carnitine began as early as 1937. The results consistently indicate that this nutrient increases or strengthens the heart’s functional capacity. In 1982, one of the very first studies observed a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol) in subjects given one gram per day of L-Carnitine for 10 to 15 weeks (Rossi 1982).
